The Bastion of Saint Francis is a historical structure located in San Gimignano, built in the 16th century by the Florentines. Featuring a circular design, it is part of the city walls and is situated at the southern extremity near Porta San Giovanni. The bastion derives its name from the former Franciscan convent established in the 13th century, now marked by a plaque commemorating Niccolò Machiavelli, who trained local militias here in 1507. This site offers a glimpse into the defensive architecture of the time and reflects the historical rivalry with Siena.
