The Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II, an iconic suspended bridge, once connected Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia over the Douro River. Constructed between 1841 and 1843, it featured impressive stone pillars and was a marvel of engineering for its time. Although it was dismantled in 1887, the remnants, including its pillars, remain a testament to its historical significance. Visitors can appreciate the views of the Douro River and the nearby modern bridges. Access to the site is free, and it’s an excellent location for photography and leisurely walks, particularly at sunset. While there are no formal visiting hours, the area is always accessible to the public.
