The Passetto di Borgo is an elevated pedestrian passage in Rome, approximately 800 meters long, connecting the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo. Constructed in 1277 by Pope Nicholas III, it served as an escape route for popes during times of danger. Notably, Pope Alexander VI used it during the invasion by Charles VIII in 1494, and Pope Clement VII fled through it during the Sack of Rome in 1527. The pass was refurbished for the Jubilee of 2000 and can now be visited only through guided tours. Its historical significance and architectural beauty make it a must-see for visitors to Rome.
