Yedikule Fortress (Yedikule Zindanları) is a fortified complex in Istanbul centered on the stretch of the Theodosian Walls associated with the historic Golden Gate; its characteristic ensemble of seven towers reflects Byzantine origins and later Ottoman reconfigurations. Originally part of the city’s land defenses, the site was adapted after the Ottoman conquest for roles including imperial treasury, armory and a state prison that held prominent detainees, which has left strong marks on collective memory and national heritage. The complex’s architectural layers, masonry details and surviving cells narrate episodes of political detention alongside military and administrative functions. Key attractions are the towers themselves, the defensive walls and the visible traces of historic uses, often interpreted on-site. Visiting arrangements, admission and accessibility provisions are determined by site authorities and may vary; broadly the monument is presented for interpretation with on-site access and explanatory information.
