Belgrad Forest (Belgrad Ormanı) is an extensive mixed deciduous woodland on the northern outskirts of Istanbul, historically important for its role in supplying the city with water and for its association with a 16th‑century settlement of people relocated from Belgrade. From the Ottoman period the forest preserves a network of dams, aqueducts and masonry waterworks that informed Istanbul’s infrastructure, and later botanical initiatives such as the Atatürk Arboretum reflect scientific and cultural investment in the landscape. The site is culturally significant as a long‑standing urban green refuge that has inspired artists, writers and naturalists, and as a locus for forestry and ecological research. Key attractions include historic water structures, reservoirs, extensive walking routes, varied native flora and fauna, and designed collections that together embody an important element of Istanbul’s environmental and historical heritage.
