Shinsekai is a historic neighbourhood in south Osaka created in 1912, with its southern half modeled on Coney Island and its northern half on Paris. Early attractions included a Luna Park amusement facility (1912–1923) and the original Tsutenkaku Tower, a 64‑metre landmark completed in 1912. Damaged and disassembled in 1943, Tsutenkaku was replaced in 1956 by a new tower designed by Tachū Naitō, rising to about 103 metres. Shinsekai developed as a working‑class entertainment district and, after minimal postwar redevelopment, acquired a reputation for poverty and past criminality while retaining a distinctive retro character.
