Shinsekai is a historic neighbourhood in south Osaka created in 1912, with its southern half modeled on Coney Island and its northern half on Paris. Early attractions included a Luna Park amusement facility (1912–1923) and the original Tsutenkaku Tower, a 64‑metre landmark completed in 1912. Damaged and disassembled in 1943, Tsutenkaku was replaced in 1956 by a new tower designed by Tachū Naitō, rising to about 103 metres. Shinsekai developed as a working‑class entertainment district and, after minimal postwar redevelopment, acquired a reputation for poverty and past criminality while retaining a distinctive retro character. The area is culturally notable for its concentration of kushi‑katsu and fugu restaurants, pachinko halls, cinemas and varied subcultures, and for proximity to Tennoji Park, Tennoji Zoo and Spa World. This summary emphasizes historical and cultural significance; operational specifics such as hours, admission and detailed accessibility are omitted.
