The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul is a major historic covered market that dates back to the mid‑15th century following the Ottoman conquest. Over centuries it developed into a vast commercial and social complex, linking local artisans, merchants and long‑distance trade routes; it has repeatedly been rebuilt and extended after fires and earthquakes. Architecturally it reflects Ottoman and earlier influences, with a dense network of covered aisles, inner courtyards, caravanserai‑style hans and ornate gates. Key attractions include traditional jewelry and textile workshops, leather and carpet traders, antique dealers, small mosques and historic fountains nestled within the market fabric. The bazaar generally operates during daylight hours on most days and has no universal entrance fee; individual shops set their prices. As a layered historic site, accessibility varies: some areas are level or ramped while older passages may have steps and uneven paving.
