Şerefiye Sarnıcı (often referred to as the Theodosius Cistern) is a Byzantine‑era underground water reservoir on Istanbul’s historic peninsula, originally constructed to supply the city. Its vaulted chambers, regular rows of columns and carved capitals illustrate medieval engineering and urban infrastructure; later Ottoman use and modern restoration add further historical layers. The cistern is culturally significant as a tangible example of Constantinople/Istanbul’s continuous urban fabric and technological heritage. Key attractions are the atmospheric columned halls, decorative capitals and shallow reflective pools, enhanced by lighting and interpretive displays, and its close relationship with nearby Sultanahmet landmarks. Visiting hours are generally during daytime with seasonal adjustments; access commonly requires a modest admission fee or is included in some museum passes. Accessibility is partial: steps and uneven surfaces can limit wheelchair access, although some adaptations were introduced during restoration.
