Akihabara (秋葉原) in Tokyo originated as a postwar electronics district and evolved into a global center for consumer electronics and hobbyist culture. Over decades it has gained historical significance as "Electric Town," reflecting Japan's role in electronics retail and do‑it‑yourself radio and parts markets. From the late 20th century it became synonymous with otaku culture—anime, manga, video games, cosplay and themed cafés—shaping contemporary pop‑culture industries. Key attractions include large and independent electronics retailers, specialty anime and manga shops, arcade game centers, collector and retro‑hardware stores, and nearby cultural sites such as Kanda Myōjin shrine. There is no single admission fee; opening times and charges vary by venue. The district is centered on Akihabara Station and is well connected to Tokyo's transit network; many major buildings provide barrier‑free access and facilities for visitors.
