The Torre del Gallo is a historic castle located in the hills of Arcetri, Florence, dating back to the 12th century. Originally part of a larger fortress, it was associated with the Galli family and strategically positioned to oversee the approach to Florence. Over the centuries, the tower underwent several transformations. It was partially demolished in 1280 due to its Ghibelline allegiance, later falling into the hands of the Guelfs. The Lamberteschi family acquired it and, in 1464, it was sold to the Lanfredini family, who maintained ownership until the family's extinction in 1741. The tower played a significant role during the Siege of Florence (1529-1530) when it served as a base for imperial troops. Notably, it is rumored that Galileo Galilei conducted astronomical observations from here during the 17th century, although this is debated among historians. In the 19th century, the tower came under the ownership of Count Paolo Galletti, who established a small museum dedicated to Galileo. The structure underwent neo-medieval restoration between 1904 and 1906 by antiquarian Stefano Bardini, who added various architectural features while preserving some of its historical elements. Today, the Torre del Gallo combines romantic charm with historical significance. Although it has transitioned to private residential use, its picturesque location and architectural features continue to attract interest. Visitors to the area can appreciate both its scenic views and its storied past, further enriched by the nearby Villa La Gallina, associated with Galileo's life.
