Built in 52 AD by Emperor Claudius, it originally supported two aqueducts: Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus. The gate was integrated into the Aurelian Walls in 271 AD, and its modifications by Emperor Honorius in 405 AD reflect early architectural recycling.
