Porta Romana is a historical gateway in Siena, constructed between 1327 and 1328 by architects Agnolo di Ventura and Agostino di Giovanni. Known for its striking crenellated roof and decorative machicolation, the gate features two separate portals and an inner courtyard adorned with arrowslits, reflecting its defensive purpose. The outer portal showcases a bas-relief of the IHS Christogram, enhancing its cultural significance. Notably, the inner portal houses a Madonna icon painted by Taddeo di Bartolo in 1417, which underwent further retouching by prominent artists, marking its importance to the city's heritage. The fresco has since been relocated to the Basilica of San Francesco.
