Chora (Kariye Camii), in Istanbul’s Edirnekapı quarter, is a monument of layered history: originally a Byzantine church, it was largely rebuilt and richly redecorated in the 11th and especially the 14th century under patronage associated with Theodore Metochites. Its cultural significance rests on exceptionally well‑preserved late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes — narrative cycles of the life of Christ and the Virgin, a notable Deesis and a Christ Pantokrator — regarded as masterpieces of the Palaeologan Renaissance. Architecturally it combines a domed core, an ornate narthex, marble and decorative stonework. Institutional status has shifted over centuries (church, mosque, museum and, since 2020, again functioning as a mosque), which has influenced access and interpretation; visiting hours, admission and access arrangements have therefore varied. The site is important for students of Byzantine art and for understanding Ottoman reception of Byzantine heritage; access may be constrained by worship and conservation needs.
