Hippopotamus - Free Audio Guide

The Nijlpaard is an art installation located in Amsterdam-Oost, designed by artist Tom Claassen in 2004. This playful, large rubber hippopotamus serves as a fender for boats at the Nijlpaardenschutsluis and is a unique landmark on IJburg. Although part of a trio initially envisioned by Claassen, only this one was realized. Visitors can see the sculpture partially submerged in the water depending on the tide. The artwork has become a beloved feature of the area, attracting both locals and tourists. There are no admission fees, and the site is accessible year-round, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a photo opportunity.
