Rikugien Garden (六義園) is a classical Edo‑period strolling (tsukiyama) garden in Bunkyo, Tokyo, created in the late 17th to early 18th century by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu under Tokugawa patronage. The garden’s name alludes to the six categories of classical waka poetry; its landscape was carefully composed to evoke poetic scenes using miniature hills, a large central pond with islands, winding promenades, purposefully placed stones, lanterns and traditional teahouses. Recognised as a nationally designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty, Rikugien exemplifies Edo gardening aesthetics and the cultural dialogue between literature, art and landscape design. Notable features include crafted viewpoints, historic teahouses, a distinguished weeping cherry and maple displays that mark seasonal transitions. General access is by urban transport and the grounds provide paved pathways; nevertheless some slopes and steps may limit mobility in parts. The site operates set visiting hours and charges modest admission fees administered by the park authority.
