Rumeli Hisarı (Rumelian Fortress) is a 15th-century Ottoman fortress on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, erected in 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II as part of preparations for the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. Its three principal towers, curtain walls and strategic position opposite the older Anadolu Hisarı illustrate its military and architectural significance in controlling maritime traffic on the strait. The site combines well-preserved fortifications, visible cannon embrasures and interpretive displays that convey its historical role; it also frames panoramic views of the Bosphorus. Practical visiting information is general: the site is open to the public with seasonal daytime hours, typically involves a modest admission charge or inclusion in some museum passes, and offers only partial accessibility because of steps, narrow passages and uneven terrain. Ongoing conservation and scholarly interpretation emphasize its cultural importance for Ottoman expansion and Istanbul’s urban landscape.
