Burgplatz in Düsseldorf is a historic riverside square in the Altstadt, originating with early city expansions and named for the medieval Burg that later became the Düsseldorf Palace; its surviving Schlossturm now contains a maritime museum. The square was considerably enlarged in the late 19th century when parts of the palace were removed and was redesigned again in the 1990s as part of a Rhine‑front renewal, which emphasized a broad riverside stair and promenade. Notable features include the Schlossturm and its shipping exhibits, the Radschlägerbrunnen recalling a local folk tradition, sculptural works such as the Stadterhebungsmonument and Dusselgitter, and adjoining historic streets and riverside terraces. Burgplatz is culturally significant as a focal point of Düsseldorf’s history, public life and events. The site connects the Altstadt and the Rhine promenade and includes steps, ramps and pedestrianized spaces integrated into the riverside landscape.
