Campo di Ghetto Nuovo in Venice’s Cannaregio district is the historic core of the Venetian Jewish community, established in 1516 when local authorities confined Jews to this island-like quarter. The English word “ghetto” derives from the Venetian geto, the foundry that once stood nearby. Over centuries the Campo developed a distinct religious and cultural life, preserved today in several historic synagogues, communal buildings and the Jewish Museum, which safeguard liturgical objects, documents and memories of daily life and persecution. The Napoleonic emancipation of 1797 ended formal restrictions, yet layers of memory remain in ceremonial traditions, languages and architecture. Key attractions are the open square itself, the synagogues and the museum; some sites have separate admissions and varying opening arrangements. The dense network of alleys, bridges and historic fabric gives the place strong cultural resonance while also presenting mobility challenges.
