Istanbul Archaeology Museums are a group of three closely linked institutions—the Archaeology Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient and the Tiled Kiosk Museum—housed near Topkapı Palace in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district. Established in the late 19th century under the direction of Osman Hamdi Bey and housed in a landmark building by architect Alexandre Vallaury (completed 1891), the complex preserves an extensive collection spanning prehistoric Anatolia, the ancient Near East, Classical Greek and Roman periods, and later eras. Highlights include the Alexander Sarcophagus, one of the earliest known diplomatic treaties, and numerous funerary monuments and sculptures excavated across Anatolia. The museums are central to Turkish cultural heritage, archaeological scholarship and public study. The site maintains scheduled public opening hours, charges admission, and provides visitor facilities with some accessibility accommodations, while historic structures may present mobility limitations.
