Ludus Magnus, Via Labicana, Monti, Municipio Roma I, Roma, Roma Capitale, Lazio, 00184, Italia

The Ludus Magnus, constructed in the late 1st century AD under Emperor Domitian, was ancient Rome’s largest gladiatorial training school and formed a functional complement to the nearby amphitheatre. Its plan included an oval training arena, surrounding galleries and adjoining rooms and barracks for trainees, with archaeological evidence suggesting a subterranean link to the main arena. Excavated remains reveal the arena outline, cells, corridors and structural features that illuminate the training, organization and social role of gladiators within Roman spectacle. The site is culturally significant as a direct witness to imperial urban entertainment, discipline and ritual performance, and ongoing conservation and research continue to refine its historical interpretation. Practical visiting details such as hours, admission and accessibility are not provided here.
