The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Thera, also known as the Church of Ypapantis, is an architectural gem built in 1827 by M. Belloni. Following the devastating earthquake of 1956, it was beautifully rebuilt, showcasing exquisite white arches and a prominent white dome. This house of worship is adorned with stunning frescoes by local artist Christoforos Asimis, as well as beautiful mosaics added in 1975. The cathedral is a significant landmark in Santorini, offering visitors a vibrant atmosphere filled with color and light, accentuated by intricate iconography. It is free to enter, but modest dress is required, and quiet visits are recommended to fully appreciate the peace of the space.
