The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the New York Public Library’s landmark on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, is a Beaux‑Arts structure completed in the early 20th century that houses research collections originating from the 19th‑century merger of the Astor, Lenox and Tilden libraries. Renamed in the 21st century following a major philanthropic gift, the building is celebrated for its monumental facade, the lion sculptures known as Patience and Fortitude, and its role as a civic symbol of learning. Its cultural significance includes stewardship of rare manuscripts, maps and archives, rotating exhibitions and public programs; interior highlights include the Rose Main Reading Room and named special collections. The building is generally open during regular institutional hours, offers free access to many public spaces while certain exhibitions or services may require a fee, and provides accessibility features such as ramps, elevators and services for visitors with disabilities.
