Temple Church in London was founded in the late 12th century by the Knights Templar. Its distinctive circular nave, modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and later chancel reflect Romanesque and early Gothic phases. Closely associated with the Inner Temple and Middle Temple—two Inns of Court—the church has long symbolised the link between medieval chivalry and the English legal profession. Notable features include the round church plan, a chancel containing medieval stone effigies of knights, richly carved capitals and heraldic memorials. Severely damaged during the Second World War, it was carefully restored while retaining important medieval fabric. The site is culturally significant for history, law and architecture, and hosts services, concerts and legal ceremonies. Visitor access is generally available but varies with services and events; a modest admission contribution may apply and some historic areas have limited accessibility.
