Fairfax House, 27, Castlegate, Bishophill, York, England, YO1 9RN, United Kingdom
Fairfax House is a remarkable Georgian townhouse located in York. Built in the early 1740s for a local merchant, it was later remodeled by the architect John Carr in 1761. The house features exquisite mid-18th century plasterwork and an impressive collection of Georgian furniture, making it one of the finest collections of its kind in Europe. After a period of neglect and various uses, it was restored by York Civic Trust in the 1980s and is now a museum open to the public. Visitors can explore its beautifully preserved rooms and view significant art pieces, including a recent portrait of Elizabeth Clifford, wife of the last Viscount Fairfax.
