Piazza Anfiteatro, San Concordio, Lucca, Toscana, 55100, Italia
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is a historic square in Lucca, Italy, constructed on the remains of a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, which shaped its elliptical form. The square originated in the medieval period and was known as "parlascio," evolving over time to serve various purposes, including a salt depot and a prison. In the 19th century, architect Lorenzo Nottolini revitalized the area, clearing constructions and opening the "via dell'anfiteatro" along its elliptical outline. Today, it features various shops and a market space, raised approximately 3 meters above the original arena. Visitors can access the square through four vaulted gates, with one replicating an original entrance. A notable feature is a cross engraved on a tile at the center, marking the intersection of the gates.
