Aydos (Aetos) Kalesi is a hilltop fortress near Istanbul with origins in the Byzantine era and later Ottoman repairs, sited to command approaches across the surrounding plain. Historically it served as a defensive stronghold and observation post, and its position has shaped local strategic and settlement patterns. Surviving elements include stretches of perimeter walls, fragments of towers, cisterns and gate remains within a largely ruinous but evocative landscape; the ensemble and its panorama contribute to the site’s cultural significance and local identity. The castle is associated with regional history and folklore and is a focus of conservation that emphasizes stabilization and interpretation rather than full reconstruction. Access involves natural, uneven terrain so accessibility is limited in places; general visiting is during daylight hours and any admission is typically modest; on-site facilities are minimal.
