Built by Omani Arabs in 1699 after expelling the Portuguese, it served various purposes over the centuries including a garrison, prison, and a terminal for the Zanzibar railways. Today, it is a major cultural center featuring curio shops, an open-air amphitheater for live performances, and restaurants. The fort hosts significant events like the Zanzibar International Film Festival. Visitors can enjoy the unique architecture and rich history, with the fort easily accessible from the main seafront. Admission fees are modest, and the site is open throughout the week.
