Porta San Frediano is a historic city gate located in Florence, Italy, within the Oltrarno district. It is part of the city's sixth circle of walls, which were completed between 1284 and 1333. The gate was constructed between 1332 and 1334, designed by Andrea Pisano, to serve as a crucial entry point along the road to Pisa. Originally intended to be the most grandiose of Florence's gates, Porta San Frediano was never completed to its full height and was later modified to accommodate advancements in military technology, particularly the use of cannons. The gate features a stone relief of the coat of arms of Florence above the archway, and historical images reveal a marble emblem that has since been integrated into the nearby wall. The wooden door, complete with original bolts and iron rings for tying horses, remains intact, along with wrought iron torch supports. Visitors can view the keys of Porta San Frediano, which are displayed at the Museum Tracce di Firenze in Palazzo Vecchio. Unlike other parts of the city, the walls surrounding this area were not demolished in the late 19th century, preserving the gate's historical significance.
