Baile Hill - Free Audio Guide

Baile Hill is a man-made earth mound in York, England, and is the only remaining feature of the fortification known as the Old Baile. Its origins date back to 1068 when William the Conqueror built a castle near the River Ouse. The Old Baile was a motte-and-bailey castle that featured a 40-foot high motte and a rectangular bailey. Although the site was primarily used for grazing, it also served as a royalist gun emplacement during the Civil War.
