The Peacekeeping Monument, also known as "Reconciliation," is a significant war memorial located in Ottawa, Canada, dedicated to honoring the country's peacekeeping forces. Completed in 1992, it commemorates the contributions of Canadian soldiers who have participated in international peacekeeping missions, both those who are living and those who have lost their lives.
Designed by artist Jack Harman in collaboration with architects Richard and Gregory Henriquez, and landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander, the monument features three soldiers—two men and a woman—standing on ridges of stone that symbolize the journey from conflict to peace. The base includes a quote from Lester Pearson, Canada’s former Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, emphasizing the need for proactive peace efforts.
Situated near major landmarks such as the National Gallery of Canada and the American Embassy, the monument is a focal point for reflection and remembrance. In 1995, it gained further recognition when it was featured on the Canadian one-dollar coin. Visitors to the site can appreciate not only its artistic elements but also its deeper significance in recognizing Canada’s role in fostering global peace and security.
