Villa di Massenzio, Via Appia Antica, Municipio Roma VIII, Roma, Roma Capitale, Lazio, 00179, Italia
The Villa of Maxentius (Villa di Massenzio) on the Via Appia Antica is an early fourth‑century imperial complex commissioned by Emperor Maxentius. The ensemble preserves a monumental circus, a large funerary rotunda commonly called the Mausoleum of Romulus, a basilica‑like audience hall and the remnants of a residential palace, offering a rare example of late Roman imperial architecture and ceremonial layout. Historically linked to Maxentius’s short reign (c. 306–312 CE), the site illustrates imperial funerary practices and the blending of public spectacle and dynastic commemoration. It lies within the Appian regional archaeological park and is managed as part of Rome’s cultural heritage. The site is generally accessible to visitors during standard opening periods with regulated admission; terrain is uneven and some areas are only partially conserved, which can limit mobility access and entry to interior spaces.
