Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) is a medieval stone tower in Istanbul’s Galata quarter, erected by Genoese settlers in the mid‑14th century as part of harbour fortifications and later reshaped through Ottoman restorations. Historically used as a watchtower and fire lookout, it has become an enduring symbol of the city and is associated with cultural legends such as the purported flight of Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi. The tower’s Romanesque massing and later roofline changes reflect its layered past; interior displays interpret its history while upper levels provide sweeping panoramic vistas of the Golden Horn and historic peninsula. Key attractions include the observation deck, historical exhibits and eating spaces housed near the top. The site is open to the public during regular opening hours with an admission fee; seasonal changes affect access and there are accessibility provisions though some areas have limited step‑free access.
