Located in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district, the Sultanahmet Camii (commonly known as the Blue Mosque) is an Ottoman imperial mosque completed under Sultan Ahmed I in the early 17th century as an expression of religious devotion and architectural ambition. Designed by Sedefkar Mehmet Agha, it is distinguished by its cascading domes, six slender minarets and an interior richly decorated with thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles in blue and floral patterns. The mosque forms a notable architectural and symbolic dialogue with the nearby Hagia Sophia, reflecting a blend of Byzantine spatial influences and classical Ottoman design. As an active place of worship, access for visitors is arranged around prayer schedules; admission has traditionally been without a fixed ticket charge, and accessibility varies by area, with some steps and ramps and on-site provisions to assist visitors with mobility needs.
