Árbæjarsafn, also known as the Árbær Open Air Museum, is a significant cultural institution located in Reykjavík, Iceland. The museum focuses on the history of Reykjavík and aims to preserve and research the city's cultural heritage. Established in response to growing interest in preserving the history of the early settlement of Reykjavík, it officially opened in 1957, set within the historic Árbær area, which was once an abandoned farm. The museum houses several historical buildings, many of which have been relocated to the site to showcase traditional Icelandic architecture and rural life. With a mission to promote understanding and respect for Reykjavík's history, Árbæjarsafn provides visitors with insights into the daily lives of the city's inhabitants from its early days to the present. The museum is open year-round, with summer hours from 10 AM to 5 PM, and operates a winter schedule from September to May. Árbæjarsafn was recognized for its excellence in 2006 when it received the Icelandic Museum Award. Visitors can explore its diverse collections and take part in various educational activities that highlight Icelandic heritage.
